This page displays the current empirical model for the free mode associated with the rotation of the fluid core inside the mantle, or free core nutation (FCN). The empirical model (in red in the figure) is obtained by a least-squares fit to the IERS EOP 08 C 04 combined series (in blue in the figure) over a sliding window.
